Mehrgarh: Introduction

Not with modern steel or anesthetic, but with a flint-tipped bow drill, steady hands, and whatever passed for courage in a Neolithic farming village on the Kacchi Plain. When archaeologists announced this discovery from Mehrgarh in the journal Nature in 2006, it pushed the history of dentistry back by thousands of years. But proto-dentistry is only one of the surprises buried in this 495-acre site in Balochistan, Pakistan. Mehrgarh may be the earliest known center of agriculture in all of South Asia, a place where people were cultivating wheat and barley, herding goats and cattle, and building mud-brick houses while much of the subcontinent remained wilderness.
