It is a strange design for a fortress, until you understand the land beneath it. Southern Armenia sits on seismically active ground, and the builders of Meghri Fortress knew it. They embedded rows of wooden beams inside the stone walls to absorb the shaking, creating earthquake-resistant zones a millennium before modern engineers gave the technique a name. The towers have outlived the walls of countless conventional fortresses across the Caucasus.
