Omar Khayyam made this prediction to his student Nizami Aruzi in 1112, somewhere in the city of Balkh, centuries before anyone thought to build him a monument worthy of his genius. When Nizami visited the grave four years after Khayyam's death in 1131, he found it in the cemetery of Hayrah, just outside Nishapur, with pear and peach trees stretching their branches over the wall and dropping blossoms onto the dust below. The prophecy had fulfilled itself. Nearly nine centuries later, the tomb that replaced that simple grave fulfills it still -- by architectural design rather than happy accident.]]></description>
