The Caribs had called it Aichi, and the Arawaks before them knew it as Touloukaera, but on November 3, 1493, when the flagship Marigalante — "Gallant Mary" — anchored at what is now Anse Ballet in Grand-Bourg, the island received the name it still carries. Marie-Galante is round and nearly flat, earning it the local nickname la grande galette — "the Big Biscuit" — and from the air its 158 square kilometers of limestone plateau look like a coin dropped into the Caribbean Sea, thirty kilometers southeast of Guadeloupe's mainland.
