Two and a half miles long, often less than a hundred meters wide, this sliver of land in the Abacos has been shaped by a single family's vision since the late eighteenth century. The Alburys arrived as British Loyalists in 1798, and they never really left. Today, most of the island's 215 residents are related to them in some way. The boats they build, the homes they construct, the conservative values they hold - all trace back to a woman named Eleanor who decided, more than two centuries ago, exactly how this place should be laid out.
