The island was called Run, barely two miles long, and the deal made perfect sense at the time. Nutmeg grew on Run. Nutmeg grew almost nowhere else. And nutmeg, ounce for ounce, was worth more than gold. This single transaction captures something essential about the Maluku Islands: for centuries, these 632 islands scattered across eastern Indonesia's volcanic arc were the center of the world economy, even if most of the world had no idea where they were.
