Photo credit mwanasimba from La Réunion, CC BY-SA 2.0. The name has nothing to do with organized crime. Mafia Island, lying 120 kilometers south of Zanzibar off Tanzania's coast, takes its name from the Arabic 'morfiyeh,' meaning group -- a reference to the small archipelago it anchors. With no tarmac roads, no ATMs, and roughly 3,000 to 4,000 overnight visitors per year, this is the Indian Ocean that mass tourism forgot. People who have been to both call it Zanzibar thirty years ago, before the boutique hotels and the Instagram crowds. Whether that comparison holds for another decade is an open question.
