After a trial lasting roughly one hour in a Waco, Texas, courtroom packed beyond capacity, seventeen-year-old Jesse Washington was found guilty and sentenced to death for the murder of Lucy Fryer. What followed -- in broad daylight, at midday, in front of Waco's city hall, with the mayor and chief of police looking on -- was one of the most thoroughly documented lynchings in American history. A professional photographer captured it frame by frame. The images were printed as postcards and sold in town. The date was May 15, 1916.
