The painting arrived at the Lofoten War Memorial Museum in Svolvaer in 2008, and its bizarre provenance -- possible Hitler artwork concealing cartoon doodles -- is exactly the kind of artifact that defines this collection. The museum is not grand. It occupies a modest space in Svolvaer, the de facto capital of the Lofoten Islands. But what it lacks in square footage, it compensates for in density, strangeness, and a collector's single-minded devotion to preserving the material history of the Second World War in northern Norway.
