Lobang Jepang -- "Japanese Tunnel" in Indonesian -- is an underground military complex that the Japanese Imperial Army carved out of the volcanic soil during World War II. Completed in 1944, the tunnel system extends an estimated six kilometers, making it one of the longest military tunnels in Asia. But the engineering is not what makes this place unforgettable. It is the story of how it was built: by the hands of tens of thousands of forced laborers, many of whom never emerged alive.
