On August 4, 1892, Andrew Borden and his wife Abby were hacked to death with a hatchet in their Fall River, Massachusetts, home. Andrew was killed on the sitting room sofa; Abby was found in the upstairs guest room, struck 19 times. The prime suspect was Andrew's 32-year-old daughter Lizzie, who was home at the time, claimed to have been in the barn, and gave contradictory statements to police. She was tried and acquitted in 1893 - the jury couldn't believe a well-bred woman could commit such violence. The rhyme children still chant ('Lizzie Borden took an axe...') convicted her in the court of public opinion. The house is now a bed-and-breakfast where guests can sleep in the very rooms where the murders occurred, eat breakfast on the murder date, and tour the crime scene. It's either profoundly disrespectful or the logical endpoint of American true-crime obsession. Probably both.
