Photo credit DirkVE, CC BY-SA 3.0. Nellie Spindler was twenty-one years old and three weeks into her work at Casualty Clearing Station 44 when a German shell hit her ward on 21 August 1917. She was awake when it happened. The matron held her, and she died within twenty minutes. Two days later, a hundred Allied soldiers and her fellow nurses stood at attention as her coffin was carried into the cemetery at Lijssenthoek, just outside Poperinge. Hers is one grave in Plot XVI, Row A. There are 10,783 others around it. Lijssenthoek is not a battlefield. It is the place where the wounded of the Ypres salient were brought to be saved, and where so many of them were not.
