      <description><![CDATA[In 1807, under French administration, the paintings were sold for almost nothing. They had been the pride of the abbey for three hundred years: an enormous altarpiece commissioned by Abbot Heinrich of Cleves around 1465, painted by an artist whose name has never been recovered. We call him the Master of Liesborn for lack of anything better. His panels are some of the great masterpieces of late medieval German painting. Today the best of them hang in the National Gallery in London, two trains and a Channel away from the quiet Westphalian village where they were made.]]></description>
