Libyco-Punic Mausoleum of Dougga: Introduction

Photo credit Youssefbensaad, CC BY-SA 4.0. In 1842, Thomas Reade, the British consul in Tunis, arrived at the ancient site of Dougga with workers and tools. His target was a bilingual inscription decorating a 21-meter stone tower crowned with a pyramid. By the time he finished extracting it, the monument was severely damaged, its stones scattered across the ground. The inscription ended up in the British Museum. The mausoleum -- one of only three surviving examples of royal Numidian architecture -- would wait more than sixty years to be reassembled.
