Founded around 300 BC by Ptolemy I of Egypt, it aimed to collect every book ever written - in every language, from every civilization. Scholars estimate it held between 40,000 and 400,000 scrolls at its peak. The complete works of Greek playwrights, the histories of lost civilizations, scientific treatises, and literary masterpieces - all gathered in one place. And then it was destroyed. Not in a single dramatic fire, as legend holds, but through centuries of neglect, war, and religious conflict. When the Library finally vanished, it took with it knowledge that humanity has never recovered.]]></description>
