Marched into a meadow beside a farm, he saw two heavy machine guns pointing at the column of prisoners. "The guns began to spit fire," he later testified. "Men fell like grass before a scythe." A searing pain pitched him forward into the heap of dying men, but even as he fell, one thought stabbed through: "If I ever get out of here, the swine that did this will pay for it." The place was called Le Paradis. Paradise.
