Photo credit Ascended Dreamer, CC BY 4.0. The Abenaki called it Mamlawbagak - a long and large sheet of water. The word was a precise description, not poetry, though the lake earns both. Lake Memphremagog stretches between Newport, Vermont and Magog, Quebec, its long, irregular body crossing the international border in a way that makes cartographers and customs agents equally nervous. Province Island, the lake's largest, is itself divided by the boundary line - roughly one-tenth American, the rest Canadian. The lake provides drinking water for 200,000 people, contains 21 islands, and has been home to at least ten lighthouses, a fleet of paddlewheelers, and a creature called Memphre that locals have reported seeing since the 18th century.
