Lake Mattamuskeet stretches 18 miles long and 7 miles wide across the Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula of eastern North Carolina, covering 40,000 acres of Hyde County. It is the largest natural lake in the state, yet you could wade across almost any part of it. The water averages just two to three feet deep, a vast shallow mirror that reflects the sky and draws hundreds of thousands of migrating birds each winter. Beneath that mirror lie the remains of one of the most ambitious -- and spectacularly failed -- land reclamation projects in American history.]]></description>
