A Kenyan government report estimated its surface area had swelled from 130 to 268 square kilometers, swallowing lakeside villages and displacing communities who had lived along its shores for generations. Crocodile and hippopotamus populations expanded with the water, and encounters between these animals and the people now living at the lake's new edges grew more frequent and more dangerous. It was a dramatic reminder that in Kenya's Rift Valley, the boundary between land and water has never been fixed.]]></description>
