The Santa Ana winds began on September 25, 1970, as they always do — hot, dry, and carrying the scent of chaparral baked by summer. By the following morning, a downed power line in the Kitchen Creek area of the Laguna Mountains had ignited a fire that would rewrite the record books. Over the next twelve days, the Laguna Fire consumed 175,425 acres of San Diego County, raced 32 miles to the outskirts of El Cajon and Spring Valley in under 30 hours, and leveled communities that had taken generations to build.
