People came looking for minerals and, inevitably, came looking for artifacts. The pothunters were already digging at what turned out to be one of the older ceremonial centers in Peru when the local governor, a man named Teodoro E. López Trelles, decided the site mattered more than the loot. He posted protections. When an American archaeologist passed through in 1969, López Trelles walked him across the mounds himself - and that tour, accepted on a hunch, eventually led to the discovery that La Galgada predated the architectural tradition it seemed to belong to.
