Kumu Art Museum: Introduction

The Finnish architect had won the 1994 competition to design a new home for the Art Museum of Estonia, and the site was Kadriorg Park, the most beloved green space in Tallinn, with the 18th-century Baroque palace at its center and trees that had been growing for two hundred years. He couldn't dominate the park. He couldn't disappear into it either. His solution was to set the museum into the limestone slope of Lasnamäe hill at the park's edge, half-buried in the geology of the place, the curving copper-clad facade rising only as high as the trees. When Kumu opened in 2006 it was the largest art museum in Estonia and one of the largest in Northern Europe. Two years later it won European Museum of the Year.
