The cat stopped at a pond and refused to move further. The hunters built their village on the spot. That was roughly six centuries ago, and the 163 slate houses they eventually constructed still stand -- or partially stand -- in the remote mountains of Pingtung County, slowly being consumed by the forest. Kucapungane, also known as Old Haocha Village, is one of Taiwan's most haunting places: a complete indigenous settlement, abandoned within living memory, crumbling just beyond the reach of the roads that might save it.
