While Koeberg's Unit 1 was powering up after scheduled maintenance on December 25th, the forgotten fastener tore through the generator's internals, forcing a shutdown that cascaded into months of rolling blackouts across the region. It was the kind of incident that makes Koeberg impossible to ignore -- Africa's only nuclear power station, perched on the Atlantic coast 30 kilometers north of Cape Town, generating roughly 5 percent of South Africa's electricity while accumulating a history that reads like a thriller novel.
