The joke has been told so many times in Knysna that it has calcified into local tradition, a perennial answer to the question every visitor eventually asks -- what does the name mean? The real answer is less amusing but more revealing. Knysna derives from a Khoi word meaning 'straight down' or 'hard to reach,' a reference to the two massive sandstone cliffs -- the Knysna Heads -- that guard the lagoon's entrance and have made the town's harbor one of the most treacherous on the South African coast.
