The flight lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. Three more flights followed that morning, the longest by Wilbur lasting 59 seconds and covering 852 feet. Then a wind gust flipped the Flyer, damaging it beyond repair. But the proof was made: powered, controlled, heavier-than-air flight was possible. Two bicycle mechanics from Ohio had achieved what centuries of dreamers had attempted. The sand dunes of Kill Devil Hills, chosen for their consistent winds and soft landings, became the birthplace of aviation. Everything that flies - every airliner, every fighter jet, every spacecraft - descends from those 12 seconds.

From altitude, Kill Devil Hills appears as a developed beach community on the barrier islands separating Albemarle Sound from the Atlantic. The Wright Brothers National Memorial is visible as a cleared area with the distinctive monument atop Big Kill Devil Hill. The site's original isolation is lost to development; beach houses now surround the sacred ground. The Atlantic beaches extend in both directions; the sound lies to the west. Cape Hatteras is visible to the south. The steady winds that brought the Wrights here still blow, but from altitude, the memorial is simply a park amid vacation development. What happened here in 1903 - the beginning of powered flight - is invisible from altitude, commemorated only in granite and markers on the sand where the Flyer first rose.
