The Parakrama Samudra, a massive reservoir he ordered constructed, still holds water today, eight centuries after the kingdom that created it collapsed. Polonnaruwa was Sri Lanka's second great capital, succeeding Anuradhapura after Chola invaders from southern India brought the first kingdom down. What rose in its place was not merely a replacement but an expansion - a Sinhalese kingdom that would reach across the sea to wage war on the Indian mainland.
