It was the 1830s, and Kedah had been under Siamese occupation since 1821. Accepting would have meant security, influence, proximity to power. But Tunku Anum understood the bargain clearly: if he became Siam's man in Kedah, the state would remain a Siamese province forever, and he would be remembered as a puppet. He chose a harder road, and it led to a kingdom.
