Its inner citadel, probably the only barrel-shaped city plan in the world, was designed to replicate the Buddhist universe in miniature, with the royal palace at its exact center -- the position traditionally assigned to the Buddha himself. From this cosmologically precise seat of power, the Kingdom of Ava dominated Upper Burma for nearly two centuries, from 1365 to 1555, fighting wars on every frontier as it tried to reassemble an empire that had fractured a century before.
