This is Kinderdijk, where the Dutch have been fighting the sea since the thirteenth century, and these mills stand as monuments to that endless struggle. Built in 1738 and 1740, they represent the largest concentration of historic windmills in the Netherlands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can still see the machinery that kept an entire nation from drowning.
