Beneath each one, a small placard lists the child's name, age, favorite food, best friend, last words, and the manner in which they were killed. David, age 11, loved riding his bicycle. His last words were, "UNAMIR will come for us." He was killed by machete. This is the room that visitors remember long after they leave the Kigali Genocide Memorial -- the room that collapses the distance between a statistic and a human being. The memorial, located in the Gisozi neighborhood just outside central Kigali, holds the remains of more than 250,000 people who were murdered during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. It is the largest mass grave site in Rwanda, and one of the most important memorials in the world.
