In the 17th century, this stretch of Taiwan's southern coast was a fishing settlement called Takao—derived from an aboriginal word meaning 'bamboo forest.' The Japanese took the island in 1895 and found the Chinese characters for the name (打狗, 'beating the dog') undignified for a city they intended to modernize. They swapped in 高雄, 'high hero,' kept the same Japanese pronunciation, and set about transforming the harbor. When the Nationalists arrived after World War II, they kept the characters and added Mandarin tones—Gāoxióng. Three different rulers, three different readings of the same written name. That layered history is Kaohsiung in miniature: a place that has been renamed, reinvented, and rebuilt without ever quite losing the texture of what came before.
