Molly was about fourteen, her cousin Gracie around ten, her half-sister Daisy only eight. They had been taken from their families by order of A.O. Neville, the Chief Protector of Aborigines for Western Australia, under the state's Aboriginal assimilation laws, and carried more than 1,600 kilometres south to the Moore River Native Settlement, north of Perth. They did not stay. Slipping away on foot, they made for the one landmark they knew would lead them home - the rabbit-proof fence, running like a stitched seam up the spine of Western Australia - and they followed it north for week after week through some of the harshest country on Earth. This is the place they were walking toward.
