Count on four to six bumpy hours, depending on road conditions, weather, and — as locals will tell you — the mood of the bus driver. Guidebooks cannot be trusted for timetables out here. This is the Chiquitania, a remote corner of Bolivia's Santa Cruz Department where six former Jesuit mission towns form a UNESCO World Heritage circuit that feels less like a museum tour and more like time travel. The churches are not behind ropes. They are still in use, still standing on grassy plazas that in some cases have barely changed since the 18th century.
