But this is not a modern high-rise. This is a 1926 Otis elevator -- Arizona's first self-service model -- originally designed to carry hospital gurneys and wheelchairs through five floors of poured concrete built into a fifty-degree mountainside. The Jerome Grand Hotel was never meant to be a hotel. It was the United Verde Hospital, the crown jewel of a copper empire that once made Jerome one of the wealthiest towns in the American West. When the copper ran out, the building sat empty for forty-four years. Now it is a hotel, and guests ride that same slow elevator to rooms where thousands once came to be healed -- or to die.
