The ancient Egyptians who saw it in the fifteenth century BC decided this was the birthplace of Amun, the god of gods - his southern throne, his dwelling place at the edge of the world. Three centuries later the Kushite kings who ruled from nearby Napata would take that idea and run with it, building a great temple to Amun at the mountain's base, inscribing their victories on its walls, and eventually using its shadow as the burial ground of queens and kings.
