From 1950 onward, the poet, filmmaker, and visual artist was a frequent visitor to Francine Weisweiller's villa Santo Sospir in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. In 1955, he attended the Classical Music Festival in nearby Menton and fell in love with the town. The mayor suggested he decorate the municipal wedding hall, and the murals Cocteau painted there in 1957 and 1958 so delighted Menton that the town declared him an honorary citizen. Half a century later, Menton built him a museum -- and the sea nearly destroyed it.
