Jedediah Hotchkiss unrolled his maps on a camp table at Narrow Passage, and Stonewall Jackson gave him a single instruction: 'I want you to make me a map of the Valley, from Harpers Ferry to Lexington, showing all the points of offense and defense.' It was the spring of 1862. Confederate morale had cratered. Union armies were closing on Richmond from multiple directions, and the Shenandoah Valley -- that 140-mile corridor of farmland running between the Blue Ridge and the Alleghenies -- looked ready to fall. What followed over the next three months was one of the most celebrated military campaigns in American history, a masterclass in speed, deception, and the exploitation of terrain that is still studied at war colleges today.
