Union armies were closing on Richmond from multiple directions, and the Shenandoah Valley -- that 140-mile corridor of farmland running between the Blue Ridge and the Alleghenies -- looked ready to fall. What followed over the next three months was one of the most celebrated military campaigns in American history, a masterclass in speed, deception, and the exploitation of terrain that is still studied at war colleges today.]]></description>
