Photo credit Unknown author, Public domain. On his desk in Seijo, in a quiet residential corner of Tokyo's Setagaya ward, Ishiro Honda kept a mortar shell. It had landed at his feet near Hankou during the war and failed to detonate. Within eight years of returning from that war, Honda would channel the atomic terror of his generation into a film about a giant monster rising from the sea, irradiated and furious. He called it Godzilla. The franchise it spawned is recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest-running in cinema history.
