The Ishibutai Kofun -- the "Stone Stage" -- is the largest megalithic structure in Japan, and it was never meant to look like this. When it was built in the early 7th century, these granite blocks lay buried beneath a broad, flat mound of earth, sealed away in darkness with whoever rested inside. The earth is long gone. What remains is a skeleton of stone so striking that locals named it for what it resembles: a stage built by giants.
