Not permanently -- but for roughly 20,000 years, according to a 2024 study published in Nature Communications, these early humans lingered in a geographic hub spanning what is now Iran, southeastern Iraq, and northeastern Saudi Arabia. They hunted, gathered, adapted to new climates, and slowly diverged into the populations that would eventually become all non-African humanity. The Iranian Plateau, it turns out, is not just a geological feature. It is the waiting room where our species sat before populating the world.
