Photo credit Abd3-013f, CC0. Two Omans existed side by side for centuries. On the coast, hereditary sultans ruled Muscat, cultivating alliances with the British Empire and managing the ports. In the mountainous interior, behind the wall of the Hajar range, the Imamate chose its leaders by election. The imam was not born into the role. He was selected for his knowledge, piety, and political skill. This system persisted through eight distinct imamates spanning from 749 to 1959, making it one of the longest-running experiments in elected governance in the Islamic world.
