The Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad is the holiest site in Iran and one of the most visited religious destinations on earth, drawing more annual visitors than Mecca's Grand Mosque. The entire city of Mashhad -- Iran's second-largest, population roughly three million -- exists because of what lies beneath the Golden Dome: the grave of Ali al-Ridha, the eighth imam of Twelver Shia Islam, who died here in 818 CE under circumstances his followers have called murder for twelve centuries.
