Between the two pyramidal foundations at Ihuatzio, archaeologists found a narrow passageway barely 1.65 meters wide. Inside it lay human skeletons and a chac-mool sculpture -- a reclining figure characteristic of Toltec culture, hundreds of kilometers from Toltec lands. How it arrived at this Purépecha stronghold on the western shore of Lake Pátzcuaro remains one of Mesoamerican archaeology's quieter puzzles. The site itself, sprawling across 50 hectares on the southern slopes of Cerro Tariaqueri in Michoacán, was no provincial outpost. Together with Tzintzuntzan and Pátzcuaro, Ihuatzio formed the power triangle of the Tarascan state -- an empire that rivaled the Aztecs and that the Aztecs never conquered.
