Then there is Humphreys Peak, where the summit climate qualifies as subarctic, six months of the year average below freezing, and hikers get struck by lightning during monsoon season. At 12,633 feet, this dormant volcano north of Flagstaff is the highest point in Arizona, a fact that surprises people who picture the state as one vast desert. The Navajo name translates roughly to "its summit never melts," and standing above the treeline on a July afternoon, watching thunderheads build over the Grand Canyon to the north while Flagstaff shimmers in the heat to the south, you understand the name perfectly. This is a mountain that belongs to a different climate zone than the state it crowns.
