Luke, who had picked up the game during seven years as a missionary in Jamaica, argued it taught cooperation and self-discipline. Within two decades, Hope Waddell graduates had carried their love of the sport to Lagos, where they helped seed the football clubs that would eventually make Nigeria one of Africa's great sporting nations. A school founded to teach carpentry and baking may have given Nigeria its national obsession.
