The two trains down to Kyle of Lochalsh on 31 December 1918 were packed with Lewis and Harris men in naval uniform, demobilising at last, carrying kitbags and Christmas gifts and the rumour that they might see their wives and mothers by morning. About three hundred and twenty men got off the trains at Kyle. The mail steamer Sheila took some of them. The naval yacht HMY Iolaire took the rest. She left Kyle of Lochalsh around half past seven that night, overloaded, heading for Stornoway in a rising wind. She struck rocks called the Beasts of Holm at about two in the morning, less than twenty yards from shore. More than two hundred men drowned within sight of the harbour lights.]]></description>
