By dawn the next morning, every other member of the crew -- all 37 of them -- was dead, sent to the bottom of the Atlantic by a German torpedo. It was the kind of cruel lottery that war deals without explanation: one man held back by a minor brush with the law, and the rest swallowed by the sea off Ocracoke Island.]]></description>
