The German battlecruiser Von der Tann fired fifty-two rounds at HMS Indefatigable before the British warship's magazines detonated, tearing her in two and killing 1,016 of the 1,019 men aboard. The destruction took roughly three minutes, beginning at 16:00 on May 31, 1916 -- the opening phase of the Battle of Jutland, the largest naval engagement of the First World War. Indefatigable was the first major warship lost that afternoon. She would not be the last.]]></description>
