Photo credit Graham Hogg, CC BY-SA 2.0. On the afternoon of 15 April 1989, ninety-seven people went to watch a football match and never came home. The FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield should have been a day of excitement. One more died in hospital days later. Two more, who suffered irreversible brain damage that afternoon, died in 1993 and 2021. What followed the crush was, if possible, worse than the crush itself: a systematic campaign of blame, cover-up, and institutional dishonesty that took the bereaved families more than three decades to dismantle.
